How Sentiment Data Can Reveal Insights Not Captured by Economic Fundamentals

Although the Australian economy had remained strong at the time of publication—GDP growing at 3.1% with inflation around 1.9% and unemployment holding steady at around 5.6%—communications from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) told a different story. Prattle’s measure of RBA sentiment had plummeted from hawkish to neutral, indicating that policymakers had a less optimistic economic outlook:
